Islamic Center avfärdar svensk rasism

"Sweden is not a racist country. Ninety percent are good people, said the Islamic Centres Becirov. But we must also be honest, its a difficult time right now.

Marttinen told how one constituent complained she could no longer wear skirts in the street without harassment. His tone mostly appears moderate, talking about close Syrian friends. People take you more seriously, sweden immigration said Marttinen. People now see we can act responsibly.

Across the Nordic region anti-immigration parties, which languished after Anders Behring Breiviks killing of 77 people in Norway in 2011, are gaining support.

REGIONAL TREND

You can see that the language and tone is more vulgar now. That gets worse and worse, said Bejzat Becirov, founder of Swedens first mosque, the Islamic Centre, in the southern city of Malmo, one of the cities with most immigrants."

Islamic Center beklagar vulgär ton mot muslimska immigranter

"Sweden received 43,900 asylum seekers in 2012, a nearly 50 percent jump from 2011 and the second highest on record. Nearly half were from Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia and will get at least temporary residency - out of a total 103,000 immigrants.

"You can see that the language and tone is more vulgar now. That gets worse and worse," said Bejzat Becirov, founder of Sweden's first mosque, the Islamic Center, in the southern city of Malmo, one of the cities with most immigrants."

Islamic Center i Financial Times

"The estate has a long history of racial problems. Bejzat Becirov, head of the local Islamic centre, said his mosque has been attacked 300 times since it was built in 1984, including two firebombs in the last 10 years. The surrounding area is the heartland of the far-right Sweden Democrat party, which won its first parliamentary seat in the last election."

British National Party om Islamic Center i Malmö

"Soeren Kern of the Madrid-based Strategic Studies Group said “Fire and emergency workers . . . refuse to enter Malmo’s mostly Muslim Rosengaard district without police escorts.” And sensibly so: When firefighters attempted to extinguish a blaze at the city’s main mosque, local Muslims pelted them with stones.

There is a straightforward reason why this has happened to Malmo, and why it is happening here in Britain, and also in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy and the numerous other parts of Europe where the cancerous tentacles of Islam have reached; The European Union has forced on its member states the same approach to their swelling Muslim populations that the Barak team is now trying to browbeat American cities and states into adopting. It is a suicide hypothesis, holding that the only threat to our security is “violent extremism.”

"There has been an Islamophobic backlash. Scandinavia’s largest mosque happens to be in Malmo. It was set on fire in 2004. The culprit was never found. An imam was shot on the premises. The head of the Islamic Center at Malmo’s main mosque, a man named Bejzat Becirov, regularly receives hate mail, adorned with pigs and pictures of Usama Bin Laden.

Becirov, a moderate Muslim from the former Yugoslavia, and hence, a European, from a community where women did not typically wear the veil, thinks the culprits behind these attacks on his mosque may be neo-Nazis, but may also be extremist Muslims who don’t like Becirov’s message of integration.

He thinks immigrants to Sweden should try harder to blend in.

“Since religion doesn’t say anything about how you should dress, maybe it’s a good idea to try to take a look at how everybody else is behaving, and try to present themselves and adapt to that,” he says. “And that would make it easier for them. Perhaps things start there."

Becirov acknowledges that it’s harder for non-Europeans to adapt to a liberal place like Sweden.

“If you look at Muslims coming from the Middle East, I think it takes 15 to 20 years before they are integrated—a generation.”

Becirov believes the number of Malmo Muslims who subscribe to extremist ideology is small, but that their recruiting methods are aggressive. In his words, python-like."

Islamic Centers stenkastning i amerikansk media

"In Sweden, which has some of the most liberal immigration laws in Europe, large swaths of the southern city of Malmö – which is more than 25% Muslim – are "no-go" zones for non-Muslims. Fire and emergency workers, for example, refuse to enter Malmö's mostly Muslim Rosengaard district without police escorts. The male unemployment rate in Rosengaard is estimated to be above 80%. When fire fighters attempted to put out a fire at Malmö's main mosque, they were attacked by stone throwers."

Soeren Kern writes for Hudson-New York, from where this article is taken.

Time jämför Breivik med skotten mot Islamic Center

"Of course, Scandinavia was never immune to extremism, and like other parts of Europe, it has suffered at the hands of Muslim fundamentalists.

Last winter, a Swedish Muslim blew himself up in a failed suicide-bombing mission in central Stockholm, and violent protests over the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in a Danish newspaper in 2005 led to dozens of deaths around the world.

But recently in Scandinavia, it is the far right that has proved the most dangerous of the radicalist movements. Last fall, following the Swedish elections, a gunman shot at least 15 residents of the city of Malmö, targeting people with dark skin. Bejzat Becirov, 72, the founder and leader of a mosque in Malmö, recently told TIME that the mosque has survived 300 hate attacks, including firebombings — and he blames popular stereotypes of Muslims. When he first issued the call to the faithful 30 years ago, he says, "an imam was associated with a rich sheik. But now they are widely associated with terrorists."

In Norway, Breivik did not target immigrants, but a 1,500-page manifesto attributed to him by the Norwegian media made clear that his actions were motivated by anti-immigrant sentiment."

"There will also be shops, medical centers and a spiritual area with a church, mosque and synagogue."

"I förra veckan blev två turkiska scouter strandsatta i Åhus.

"Police allege the shooting at Malmo's Islamic center — Sweden's largest mosque — was not random. Investigators say it was one of ten attempted murders and at least one killing perpetrated by a gunman whose objective was to "shoot at immigrants."

"Malmo's Islamic center serves a 60,000-strong Muslim community, including people who speak 120 different languages."

"Bejzat Becirov, the mosque's founder and chief executive, remains shocked by the Dec. 31, 2009, shooting through the window that wounded his colleague. The victim had been sitting at a desk when the sniper took aim and fired. Shards of glass were removed from his neck.

"He could have been hit if that pot wouldn't have been there," Becirov said, motioning toward the window sill where a heavy terracotta planter sits, palm fronds fanning out from its center.

The bullet was found lodged in a wooden cabinet. The office worker was treated at a hospital and later released.

Police arrested Peter Mangs, 38, in connection with the mosque shooting, part of a series of attacks in Malmo that started with the October 2009 murder of a 20-year-old woman. She was shot as she sat in a car with a male friend of an immigrant background. He was also seriously injured.

Mangs denies any involvement in the shooting spree. However, his father told reporters in November that his son "lived in fear of immigrants taking over Swedish society." Police in Malmo told msnbc.com that they are still investigating the motive behind the attacks. Mangs remains in custody.

Fortress of tolerance

The victim of the mosque shooting has since returned to his native Albania "and he doesn’t want to come back," Becirov added.

The attack was an affront to Becirov, who had during the past three decades strived to build a fortress of tolerance.

"It is supposed to be – and it is – an open mosque, open to everybody, not just Muslims and believers, but to everybody for just that policy: to make people come together and see that we are equals. And that's the way it's working.

"We often get the comment that this is the way you wish it would be everywhere," said the 69-year-old Becirov, who fled Communist Yugoslavia by breaking away from a student trip to Sweden in 1962. "That people can go into a mosque, or go into a church to pray no matter what religion you come from, and to work together for the common good."

An imam at the center works regularly with the Christian community, an event with the Jewish community is in the works and the site has hosted the head of Norway's far-right political party, Becirov said. The mosque's founder conceded that they might have disagreed on a few things, but insisted they were able to have a fruitful discussion.

Becirov says Malmo's Islamic center was established as "a Swedish mosque" and that the language is key to uniting people born in the country and immigrants.

It's impossible not to notice how many archetypal blond-haired, blue-eyed Swedes work there. Seventy percent of its 70-person staff are non-Muslim, Becirov said. His translator for the day – Cecilia Hallstrom, who doubles as a first-grade teacher at the Islamic center’s school – wears a small navy blue cross on the delicate chain around her neck.

Located in the immigrant-heavy Rosengard neighborhood, the mosque has been the target of more than just a gunman. Becirov said there have been roughly 300 incidents – including the release of a pig – since it was founded as Scandinavia's first mosque in 1983.

The most devastating attack occurred in 2003, when an arsonist set a fire that engulfed the complex and damaged its school. Only the walls of the prayer room remained, Becirov said. While the center was being rebuilt, another Molotov cocktail was hurled at it.

"After 9/11, we've had fires and the shooting and everything, but nobody has been able to stop us from cooperating with others," Becirov added.

'Norms and values'

Akesson is unconvinced by Becirov's claims of openness and the center's moderate approach to Islam.

The far-right politician maintains that Swedish identity is not rooted in the color of an individual's skin but instead in adherence to the "norms and values that have built up the Swedish society." He sees elements of Islam as running counter to those.

He said the Malmo Islamic center is "not a Swedish building, it doesn't look Swedish," adding that minarets "shouldn't be built at all."

Judar höll möte i Ögårdsskolans klassrum

"Back in Malmo's Rosengard in early April, Bejzat Becirov offers a guided tour of his mosque and Islamic school. Mr Becirov arrived from Macedonia in 1962 and is perhaps a model of a newcomer who has bridged gaps between cultures and religions in his adoptive country.

“This was the first mosque to be built in Scandinavia, it was built in 1984,” he explains. He took no foreign money from international Islamic organisations for its construction, but accepted donations from churches and synagogues in southern Sweden as well as from the local Muslim population.

It is a Friday, and as classes finish, dozens of small children pour out into the spring sunshine. A few girls wear headscarves. Now the first of 3,000 adults arrive for prayer sessions.

“At this mosque 130 languages are spoken, but I tell everyone they must learn Swedish. We have 55,000 members, and 5% of those are ‘original' Swedes,” says Mr Becirov.

In the days after September 11th 2001, Christians, Jews and Muslims held meetings in the classrooms of the Islamic centre.

On April 27th Mr Becirov's mosque and school was largely gutted by fire, with arson suspected."

Islamic Centers historia för engelska läsare

"According to representatives of the Islamic Center in Malmö, discussions about constructing purpose built mosques were initiated in 1960. This gave rise at the time to a certain resistance from the local society, but plans to build a mosque in Malmö were still alive in the early 1980s when construction of the Islamic Center was started. The mosque in Malmö was opened with a Friday prayer on April 20, 1984. The driving force behind the mosque construction was Bejzat Becirov. He came to Sweden in 1962 from Yugoslavia and formed, together with Midhat Ibrahimbegovic the Muslim Assembly in 1967. Midhat came to Sweden in 1953 and settled in Lund, and worked as an electrical engineer at the engineering firm JL Weibull in Åkarp.

During an interview, Midhat recalls that the number of Muslims in Sweden in 1953 was around 500, but no one in Lund, to his knowledge. In the late 1950s, more Muslims came because of labour migration and, since then, the number has been constantly increasing. In 1961, Midhat arranged the first Muslim common prayer and celebration of the Eid ul-Adha festival in Malmö. Approximately 60-70 Muslims from Malmö, Lund and Copenhagen, attended the event.

According to the Islamic Center's website the main aim of the Mosque and Islamic Center was to preserve contemporary Muslim heritage within the context of a future Swedish identity. For almost 30 years now, the Islamic Center has been one of Sweden's leading Islamic institutions.

The Center has unfortunately over the years been subjected to a series of sabotage and the Center's leaders often receive threats. On the night of April 27 2003 large parts of the mosque area, including the Muslim independent school Ögårdsskolan were devastated in a major fire which is suspected to have been deliberately set. No one has been prosecuted for the fire as yet. Other attacks against the mosque consisted of racist graffiti and broken windows and a number of minor arson attacks. It is said that at one point a pig was thrown into the mosque."

Becirov skyller media för etniska motsättningar

"Targets have included a mosque and a police station"

"Bejzat Becirov, the 72-year-old founder and leader of a mosque in Malmö, says that his mosque has survived 300 hate attacks — including fire bombs —since it opened in 1983. In the early years, he had to whitewash swastikas from the building's façade. But he believes relations between Muslim migrants and Swedes have lately grown worse. On New Year's Eve last year, a shot was fired through a window of the mosque — police are now re-evaluating whether the attack was linked to the more recent shootings.

Becirov blames popular stereotypes of Muslims in the Swedish media for rising ethnic tensions. When he first issued the call to the faithful 30 years ago, "an Imam was associated with a rich Sheik," he says. "But now they are widely associated with terrorists."

But despite Becirov's despair, it would seem that the bulk of Malmö's population relishes the city's multi-ethnic mix."

Polisen kopplar inte moskéskotten till Malmös laserman

"Swedish police say they've arrested a suspect after a series of shootings of immigrants in the city of Malmo.

A 38-year-old Swede with a gun license and no previous criminal record is in custody."

"There is a lot of fear. People are afraid to go out at night, in the morning and even during the day," Bejzat Becirov, head of the Islamic centre that runs Malmo's mosque, said in an interview.

On Dec. 31, a shot was fired into an office inside the Islamic center's building. Becirov said the bullet ricocheted off a flower pot before hitting a desk cabinet.

"Had the flower pot not been there, it would have hit my employee," Becirov said. "He would have gotten it in the back of his head."

Police confirmed the shooting, but not yet any link to the serial gunman."

BBC intervjuar Becirov om lasermannen

"28 October 2010

Sweden alarmed by series of 'racist' shootings

By Tim Mansel BBC News, Malmo

Bejzat Becirov points to a large hole in the bottom corner of a window at the Islamic Centre, Malmo's largest mosque.

"It was last year," he said, "New Year's Eve, and there were people in there, drinking tea and writing greetings cards.

"Then one of them felt a kind of rush of air, and splinters of glass on the back of his neck. The police later found a bullet embedded in a piece of furniture."

This is not the worst thing that has happened at the mosque. Mr Becirov, its director, also remembers an arson attack that caused severe damage in 2003.

But the shot fired at the mosque late last year is now being re-evaluated.

Could it form part of a wider series of unexplained attacks that the police in Malmo are now hoping the public can help solve?"

Islamic Center intervjuas av The Guardian

"Teaching 21 seven-year-olds in a primary school in the immigrant "ghetto", Cecilia Hallström is the sole native Swede in the well- equipped classroom.

"Of course, the school is open to everyone, but it is only Muslims who come here," she said. The children, taught in Swedish, are native Arabic, Pashtun, Kurdish and Bosnian speakers of a dozen nationalities. Hallström is a firm supporter of multiculturalism, but noted:

"People are just getting fed up. The far right is not new here, but it is gaining ground. We've taken in so many new immigrants that people are saying we need to slow down and take proper care of the ones that are here."

Signs of friction and trouble are not hard to find beneath the veneer of Scandinavian order, decency and prosperity. Beyzat Becirov points to the window in his office at Malmo's main mosque.

A bullet perforated the reinforced glass earlier this year, shaved the neck of a colleague and lodged itself in the drawer of a desk.

"We've got to defeat all fascism," said the imam and head of Malmo's 60,000- strong Islamic community.

"But you get it on both sides, on our side as well." His mosque is the oldest and biggest in Sweden. It has been burned down once, and a pig was placed in the prayer hall. Becirov said there had been 300 attacks since it was built in 1983. There have been riots. There are no-go areas.

Two things were new in Malmo, said Becirov. Recent years had brought a flood of people "from Asia, Africa, and Arab countries. There's a problem with the Somalis, the Lebanese, the Palestinians. They have difficulty integrating. And there's no jobs."
The other novelty was the local rise of the Sweden Democrats, who Becirov described as the "new Nazis", suggesting that the country was joining the European club. "It's a bit like a tsunami spreading across Europe. And now it's here, too."

Becirov jämför Jimmie Åkesson med Adolf Hitler

"At the main mosque and Islamic center in Malmo, Beyzat Becirov, who came to Sweden from Yugoslavia more than 40 years ago, said that most Swedes were welcoming, but that perhaps 2 to 4 percent of the population seemed to say “that economic problems are due to the Muslims.”

He said there had been dozens of attacks on the mosque, including a serious fire in 2003. In one office, he pointed to a window with a bullet hole. As for Mr. Akesson’s Sweden Democrats, he said that their support was not substantial, before adding, “But Hitler’s support started small.”"

Koranbrännare förlorade jobbet

"The protester who burned pages from the Koran outside a planned mosque near Ground Zero has been fired from NJTransit, sources and authorities said Tuesday.

Derek Fenton's 11-year career at the agency came to an abrupt halt Monday after photographs of him ripping pages from the Muslim holy book and setting them ablaze appeared in newspapers.

Fenton, 39, of
Bloomingdale, N.J., burned the book during a protest on the ninth anniversary of Sept. 11 outside Park51, the controversial mosque slated to be built near Ground Zero.

He was apparently inspired by Pastor Terry Jones, the Florida clergyman who threatened to burn the Koran that day but later changed his mind.

NJ Transit said Fenton was fired but wouldn't give specifics.

"Mr. Fenton's public actions violated New Jersey Transit's code of ethics," an agency statement said.

"NJ Transit concluded that Mr. Fenton violated his trust as a state employee and therefore [he] was dismissed."

Fenton was ushered from the protests by police on Saturday and questioned, but he was released without charges.

"He said, 'This is
America,' and he wanted to stand up for it, in a Tea Party kind of way," a police source said.

Another police source said Fenton described himself as a "loyal American" exercising his "right to protest."

Hans dotter heter Arjumand Carlstein.

"Generally, in these organisations women do not speak as leaders or spokespersons outside or inside the group. The act of making statements might be free, but when they speak, their speech is disciplined and under the surveillance of others.

An interesting situation developed in Malmö at the Islamic Center (sic!) running the only purpose built mosque in Malmö

Sofia Becirov, the daughter of the long time director Bejzat Becirov ran an information campaign for the mosque. She did this together with another young woman, Arjumand Carlstein, who did not wear a veil and was at times criticised for this.

Moreover, she was living with a man without being married who was not even Muslim! She was also very outspoken and personal, and did not work in any of the traditional roles of a da’i.

But after finishing a major project resulting in a book (Insikt, 2002) Arjumand Carlstein stopped working for the Islamic Center but the daughter of the director is still employed.

This far in the history of Islam in Sweden, this is an unusual situation. If a woman holds a position she is very likely married to or the daughter of one of the men who have a power position in the organisation. I am not by this implying that these women are powerless or incompetent, but the possibility of a female Muslim to be perceived as an authority seem to be linked to this kind of relation to a man who have or have had authority."

Islamic Center känner till extremistgrupper i Malmö

"As a group of Swedish Muslims begin their midday prayers in a mosque still blackened by smoke from a recent Molotov-cocktail attack, Bejzat Becirov, director of Malmo's Islamic Center, is talking urgently.

"I'm afraid the same thing will happen here as in Paris," says Mr. Becirov, a Macedonian immigrant who opened Scandinavia's first mosque in this city in southern Sweden in 1984."

"Meanwhile moderate Muslims like Becirov, whose progressive mosque is a place where Sunnis and Shiites praying side by side, are increasingly under fire from both Swedish nationalists who see them as dangerous representatives of radical Islam and Muslim fundamentalists who see them as selling out to Western ideas.

"It's been like hell on earth to deal with this whole process," sighs Becirov, displaying Swedish press accounts of the last firebombing of the mosque Oct. 21.

But although the attacks on Becirov's mosque have generated support from Muslims in Sweden and abroad, many Malmo Muslims are turning to increasingly radical forms of Islam - in some cases alienated by Becirov himself.

"This mosque is no good," says one Palestinian refugee who works nearby. "The imam, he is no good. He says one thing and he does another," he says, accusing him of un-Islamic activities, such as drinking alcohol."

"These neighborhoods are hunting grounds for Islamists but how many and how organized [they are] it's impossible to say," says Aje Carlbom, a Malmo University researcher who began studying Rosengaard society nearly ten years ago.

"Twenty years ago when the mosque was established they [its founders] had some political problems and pushed the different factions out," Carlbom explains. "These small factions established their own mosques in basements."

"I know for a fact that there are small extremist groups in Malmo," says Arjumand Carlstein, a social worker at Malmo Islamic Centre, attached to the mosque. "And apart from the organized groups, you also have the Internet and extremists can easily communicate with each other in other parts of the world."
