Islamic Center i bidragsfinansierat konstprojekt

"Nitton konstnärer ställer ut på flera platser i hela Malmö med start idag. De flesta av konstverken finns utomhus. Arrangörerna bakom utställningen Freakshow hoppas att folk ska röra sig i andra områden än de brukar."

" – Vi vill ge folk som aldrig annars skulle få ställa ut i det offentliga rummet en chans att göra det, säger Arjumand ”Aje” Carlstein, projektledare från den ideella konst- och kulturföreningen Underliv som arrangerar utställningen.

I början av förra året funderade hon och projektledarkollegan Elin Whilde över situationen i Malmö, stadens rykte som gangsterstad och hur de kunde jobba med de frågor som var aktuella då. Föreningen Underliv bildades."

"Utställningen är en del av projektet Formalin som arrangeras av konst- och kulturföreningen Underliv.

Projektet stöds av bland andra Kulturbryggan, Malmö stad och Islamic Center.

Föreningen erbjuder guidade turer med minibuss till några av verken."

EU om könsmakt på Islamic Center

EU-kommissionen har givit ut en bok som behandlar muslimer i sekulariserade EU-stater. Islamic Centers VD heter Bejzat Becirov och hans dotter Sofia Becirov. I den stora moskéns styrelse i Malmö sitter även Tommy Carlstein. Hans dotter heter Arjumand Carlstein. Båda döttrarna har enligt boken endast fått inflytande för att deras muslimska fädrar har makt:

"Generally, in these organisations women do not speak as leaders or spokespersons outside or inside the group. The act of making statements might be free, but when they speak, their speech is disciplined and under the surveillance of others.

An interesting situation developed in Malmö at the Islamic Center (sic!) running the only purpose built mosque in Malmö

Sofia Becirov, the daughter of the long time director Bejzat Becirov ran an information campaign for the mosque. She did this together with another young woman, Arjumand Carlstein, who did not wear a veil and was at times criticised for this.

Moreover, she was living with a man without being married who was not even Muslim! She was also very outspoken and personal, and did not work in any of the traditional roles of a da’i.

But after finishing a major project resulting in a book (Insikt, 2002) Arjumand Carlstein stopped working for the Islamic Center but the daughter of the director is still employed.

This far in the history of Islam in Sweden, this is an unusual situation. If a woman holds a position she is very likely married to or the daughter of one of the men who have a power position in the organisation. I am not by this implying that these women are powerless or incompetent, but the possibility of a female Muslim to be perceived as an authority seem to be linked to this kind of relation to a man who have or have had authority."

Islamic Center känner till extremistgrupper i Malmö

"As a group of Swedish Muslims begin their midday prayers in a mosque still blackened by smoke from a recent Molotov-cocktail attack, Bejzat Becirov, director of Malmo's Islamic Center, is talking urgently.

"I'm afraid the same thing will happen here as in Paris," says Mr. Becirov, a Macedonian immigrant who opened Scandinavia's first mosque in this city in southern Sweden in 1984."

"Meanwhile moderate Muslims like Becirov, whose progressive mosque is a place where Sunnis and Shiites praying side by side, are increasingly under fire from both Swedish nationalists who see them as dangerous representatives of radical Islam and Muslim fundamentalists who see them as selling out to Western ideas.

"It's been like hell on earth to deal with this whole process," sighs Becirov, displaying Swedish press accounts of the last firebombing of the mosque Oct. 21.

But although the attacks on Becirov's mosque have generated support from Muslims in Sweden and abroad, many Malmo Muslims are turning to increasingly radical forms of Islam - in some cases alienated by Becirov himself.

"This mosque is no good," says one Palestinian refugee who works nearby. "The imam, he is no good. He says one thing and he does another," he says, accusing him of un-Islamic activities, such as drinking alcohol."

"These neighborhoods are hunting grounds for Islamists but how many and how organized [they are] it's impossible to say," says Aje Carlbom, a Malmo University researcher who began studying Rosengaard society nearly ten years ago.

"Twenty years ago when the mosque was established they [its founders] had some political problems and pushed the different factions out," Carlbom explains. "These small factions established their own mosques in basements."

"I know for a fact that there are small extremist groups in Malmo," says Arjumand Carlstein, a social worker at Malmo Islamic Centre, attached to the mosque. "And apart from the organized groups, you also have the Internet and extremists can easily communicate with each other in other parts of the world."

Becirov om islams hot mot Europa

Islamic Centers VD Bejzat Becirov deltog i EuroNews program om européer. I videoklippet filmas den stora moskén i Malmö mellan minuterna 5 och 7. Vi ser Becirov uttala sig om europeisk integration. Därefter öppnar Becirov dörren till en lågstadieklass på den muslimska friskolan Ögårdsskolan som han också är rektor för. Kamerateamet filmar en datalektion där imamen Ayoub Chibli är lärare. Vi får därefter följa med in i det lilla skolbiblioteket som dignar av islamisk litteratur. Till sist en intervju med Arjumand Carlstein som var projektledare och suppleant i Islamic Centers styrelse.

"Europe and european countries have there system and they don´t want to open up to anything new. The immigrants who are coming here have to fit into the european model at any price. The old european system and nothing other than that. We are working for integration and to prove that we who coming from outside have something to contribute."
